When Jess asked about collaborating for a photoshoot cake-smash I was delighted.  It was the perfect timing to mark a milestone birthday, Mollie turning 2 and also gave me an opportunity to bring some local businesses together to celebrate one another, support one another and share some hopefully wonderful content.

Knowing Jess as I do, I wasn’t worried or nervous in the slightest, she has a very calming nature and I knew that Mollie, while I couldn’t guarantee pose perfection, wouldn’t feel anything other than calm and happy in her studio.

We pulled up with cake and outfits and went straight into her perfect little studio. White, calm, beautiful, natural props and a tiny delicate rail of beautiful baby clothes (how I wish we had come to Jess when Mollie was a few days old!) A little slice of studio heaven.

Mollie was instantly drawn to the props, in particular the wooden birthday cake (how apt!) and from there it was a breeze. She happily got into her matching Christmas Pjs with me (a small request for an image from myself) and before we had a chance to give any sort of direction she had pulled the chair into the middle of the set and started posing. She does not take after me at all(!)

Baby Photographer Norfolk

A quick outfit change later into a piece made specially by the very talented Little Dottie Designs and she was back into pose mode… gleefully knocking over the TWO props and delicately eating all the sprinkles from the cake.

Jess gave no direction; the whole experience was led by Mollie with me guiding her for a few of the shots. We stopped when she stopped, and Jess shot when she was happily eating her Little Cake Company cake (topped beautifully by the topper from the talented Vellamaes) and we also took some fun time-lapse videos from #bts.

In under an hour it felt that it came to a natural end as there had been no incidents, meltdowns or tears… Mollie truly enjoyed the experience as did I. I have threatened to come back weekly for Jess’ calming influence over my little whirlwind of a toddler.

I cannot recommend Jess enough, she’s a mama herself and she just ‘gets it’ she was efficient without being bossy, she was calm without being airy and it felt more like a playdate than a studio shoot.

There’s not much point waxing lyrical about the final shots – I think they speak for themselves.

Jess can we come back for every birthday?

Jess Wilkins Photography:  Inside my newborn baby studio

Jess Wilkins Photography:  Inside my newborn baby studio

Over the past five years, I’ve welcomed hundreds of wonderful families from across Norfolk into my purpose-built studio. Located in Norwich, the studio is specially set up to be welcoming, convenient and comfortable for families. I have a lot of experience photographing babies and young children. So know exactly how to ensure your family is happy and comfortable for the duration of your visit.

Parking

When you’ve got a baby, changing bags and maybe  another child in tow. Easy and accessible parking is very important. When you arrive at the studio you’ll find parking right outside my house. This makes it easy for you to carry your bags, belongings and baby inside.

Looking after baby

Before, during and after the shoot your baby is my number one priority. At the studio you’ll find everything that new parents need to care for their baby. Including nappies, wipes, a changing mat and plenty of space for bottle and breast feeds.

Refreshments

When you arrive at the studio you’ll find a selection of snacks to keep you going, with tea and coffee available for parents. Full length studio sessions are never rushed so there’s plenty of time for you to relax and enjoy a cuppa.

Older siblings

Older siblings are always welcome to come along to the shoots, even if they don’t want to join in themselves. There are wooden toys to play with and if you have a tablet you can plug it into the Wi-Fi. If you feel they may get restless in a newborn shoot.  One parent is welcome to go off and explore the local woods/parks. Or pop to White House Farm café which is just a short drive from my home studio.

 studio

The shoot

During the shoot itself i’ll work hard to ensure your baby is comfortable and happy at all times. The shoot will last between two and two and a half hours and is always baby-led. I’ll capture your baby both asleep and awake . I use a small heater, white nose maker and a collection of delicate rompers and wraps to keep your baby warm and snug.

studio

Your baby will be photographed on a beanbag surrounded by blankets and soft things. I don’t use props in order to ensure all the focus is on your brand new baby. As all babies are completely unique, each shoot is unique. We’ll work around you and your baby making sure everyone is happy at all times.

Pregnancies diaries Week 37/38 MLBU birth

Pregnancies diaries Week 37/38 MLBU birth

The end is in sight and so is my MLBU birth,   very soon we'll be seeing Baby M and the back of having hundreds of pillows in the bed, waddling and back ache. I fear I'll have to come to terms with more stretch marks. I know they're to be celebrated but I don't think I'm kind to myself and will feel very conscious of them. Still I know I can't do anything about them it's just one of those things.

On a positive note my iron levels are up and my MLBU birth is round the corner. My hospital bag is packed, give or take a few things and birthing plan sorted. I've finished work and officially on maternity leave plus Jasmine has started back to nursery so my days are slightly lighter and princess role play has calmed down!

My focus has been organising Jasmine's 3rd birthday party which was a success thank goodness.

Andy questioned whether it was the longest children's party ever but we got through it. I completely have every admiration for the bakers out there. I managed to make a butterfly cake for the family gathering we had last week, as requested, but not quite sure it would make a local cake competition let alone GBBO! Still, it was edible with lots of sponge, buttercream and sweets. For the kids party I admit I cheated and bought a cake. I just didn't have enough time, energy or creativity to bake again! As it was Andy and I spent a day prepping everything and hoping the rain would stay away. And it did.

almost due date

guest blogger

Sadly I've finished my pregnancy aqua course, however I'm keeping myself going by fitting in a few pregnancy yoga classes. My back pain has been pretty uncomfortable at times so anything I can do to ease it is worth motivating myself. We've even started sleeping with our pillows at the bottom of the bed so I can lay on my right side and we can still cuddle! One thing I've managed to avoid is any swelling to my feet and ankles and I can still bend down. Result!

I'm also conscious that I need to practice breathing and properly get into the right mindset for birthing. Some might not agree and just say go with it, however I like to feel in control and prepared as much as possible. Which reminds me I need to buy that first 'going home' outfit for Baby M!

I'm now trying to put my feet up more although it's difficult with a 3 year old, when there seems to be washing, ironing and cooking to be done constantly.

MLBU birth

Oh not to mention playing, crafting and pretending. Still we're thoroughly excited about meeting Baby M soon. All I'll say is watch this space as next time I blog I may be introducing our new arrival. In fact feel free to guess her weight, eye colour and the most important of all, will she be born with or without hair.

Seriously Cute Cake Smashes Make the Perfect Pictures!

Seriously Cute Cake Smashes Make the Perfect Pictures!

 cake smash norfolk

Cake Smashes : One of the best things about taking portraits of kids and babies is that it lets us have some real fun in the studio. Many of the best photos you’ll see of children capture them when they’re laughing or smiling naturally, so introducing some simple but cute props and peekaboo to the shoot is a sure fire way to get some truly classic images.

One of the ways to mark a 1st or 2nd birthday at my home studio in Norfolk is doing a ‘cake smash’. An optional extra for the end of your family shoot or baby and toddler shoot, cake smashes give kids the chance to let their hair down and enjoy some tasty baking and the photographer the chance to get some fantastic shots.

How does a cake smash work?

If you’ve brought your child in for a kids’ photo shoot or a family shoot, you’ll have the option of adding a cake smash to the end of the session. Once we’ve taken a variety of timeless shots of your child in their best outfits, we’ll wheel out a specially prepared cake by a local cake maker and let your baby or toddler have some fun.

As your child demolishes the cake, we’ll snap away, capturing some unique images as they indulge in their tasty treat. Cake smashes last around 10 to 25 minutes depending on the child. Once they’ve had some fun, if they’re happy to do so, we’ll pop them in a little bubble bath so they can get clean and we can take another couple of timeless snaps. I oragnise the colletion of the cake and clean up after the cake smash, I take care of it all making it stressfree.

Why a cake smash is the perfect way to end your shoot

Cake smashes are a fantastic way to end a family or birthday photo shoot. Kids absolutely love them so it helps to ensure they end the session on a very happy note. Cake smashes also gives me the  opportunity to capture some fun and unique images that you can treasure forever. They make great gift ideas for grandparents too!

If you’re bringing your child in for a birthday shoot, a cake smash is even more apt. You can use the images we capture as a thank you card to send to friends and family after their party or simply get it framed and keep it as a reminder of this important milestone.

Choosing your cake

When you book your cake smash, i’ll give you a few different cakes to choose from (the cake maker can make lots of colour variations too). You can opt for a giant cupcake , a tiered cake covered in sprinkles or a variety of different designs. My favourite is a simple iced cake with minimal decoration. I love this style as it doesn’t distract from your child and babies can grab and smash it more easily.

Pregnancy blog - third trimester

Pregnancy blog - third trimester:

After having a nauseating first trimester which trickled into the second, I find myself in the third trimester with only fourteen weeks till Baby M arrives, unless she decides to make us wait! I can now say I'm finally enjoying being pregnant!

third trimester blog

The past two weeks have been busy with lots of fun stuff. Andy and I enjoyed a grown up trip to London, wahoo. We've been to the beach, visited Pensthorpe and completed a toddle for Banardos with nursery. Tiring as it is I'm also still working which I plan to do till I can no longer get close to the table to massage! I will say the fun stopped momentarily when I had a meltdown about not having a bikini that fitted just as I was going to take Jasmine swimming. She looked at me and said 'Oh mummy!'

For those that know me I am reasonably endowed, however I've recently been told that to accompany my growing bump my boobies have become ginormous! Judging by the message Andy left me the other day it's all fine though (see pic)! Oh and we did make it to swimming in the end.

As I understand it, at this point in pregnancy/ thirs trimester the amniotic fluid has reduced making any baby movement felt. I'd definitely agree with that as I can feel all the moves she makes! Her pattern of movements seem to be early morning and late evening with some added squirms when I eat or if she hears Andy and Jasmine talking! She's definitely sensitive to noise.

We had a check in with the midwife and heard that lovely whooshing sound of baby M's heartbeat. I also had the usual blood pressure and urine sample checks too, both of which were fine. My speech on the other hand has utterly gone to pot. I can't get my words out, forget what I'm saying and sometimes can't even think of the right words to say. Baby brain has kicked in. Luckily that's not something checked by the midwife!

Sleeping in the heat has been bearable. I think the worst part is turning over. I feel and probably look like, a beetle when they're stuck wriggling on their backs! I'm sure there'll come a time when I actually can't right myself!

Cravings are still non-existent but I'm enjoying the freedom to eat icecream when I fancy it. A gelato in Southwold was pretty lush at the weekend after paddling in the sea and lunch at The Nelson pub (one of Andy's favs). A pre-Father's Day treat.

Guest blog : Pregnancy diary part 3 - 22 weeks pregnant

Guest blog : Pregnancy diary part 3 - 22 weeks pregnant: Week 22 and I've definitely grown. Luckily the dungarees still fit and I've dragged out my old maternity tops too. It feels like time is flying by. We have four months left till the little lady arrives and in some ways that seems a way away and in others it feels like we need to get our skates on to prepare! Nesting has almost certainly commenced. Lounge and kitchen have been spring cleaned and the bedrooms are underway. I should be on first name terms with the ladies at the charity shop!

Our experience at the Sonography School was brilliant. We had two trainees 'surf the bump' which was great. Nothing beats seeing your little one moving around. I love how clear you see the spine and its movements. Plus the skill required in learning to use the equipment is pretty impressive as you have to almost think in 3D to get the right angle on the scanner.

I was lucky enough to win a launch 'like & share' competition for The Barns Beauty Rooms in Sprowston last month and I'd booked my 2hrs of relaxation this week. The facial was dreamy and my skin was in need of some hydration. I then had a soothing massage that completely relaxed me, to the point of feeling wiped out when I got home.  This leads me nicely onto napping! I'm feeling much better now aside from afternoon tiredness. So much so to encourage Jasmine to have a rest we both snooze together. I now feel like a toddler and when I wake, I'm refreshed like a Duracell bunny!

https://www.facebook.com/TheBarnBeautyRooms/

https://www.facebook.com/TheBarnBeautyRooms/

Jasmine has tuned in more to the baby. Her latest thing is pretending she has a baby in her tummy that miraculously pops out every so often. If only! She also likes to blow raspberries on my tummy which she finds hilarious and gets the baby squiggling too! Movements have stepped up a gear and usually happen around 5am or if there's a sudden noise. Which in our household happens quite often.

My husband also can't get over the idea that the baby could be moving in my tummy without me knowing when I'm asleep!  I read somewhere that mums are superheroes and our super power is growing another human. Oh so very true.

Till next time where we may have thought of some baby names and how we're gonna approach this birth.

Looking for a baby photographer to capture your newborn’s first few months?

Baby Photographer Norfolk Blog:

Looking for a baby photographer to capture your newborn’s first few months?

As every parent will tell you, those first few months of a child’s life will fly by in an instant. Before you know it, your newborn will be crawling, walking, talking and heading off to nursery. Capturing this unique time in photos won’t just give you precious memories to look back on, it will also give your child an important and beautiful record of their very first days, weeks and months. If you’re currently searching for a talented baby photographer in Norwich, here’s what to look out for to ensure you get images that capture the unique personality and beauty of your baby.

Choose a photographer with experience

As you probably know by now, taking photos of newborn babies isn’t always easy. Most newborns sleep for the majority of the day, and if they’re not asleep, they’re often feeding, being winded or being changed. Taking a beautiful image that captures the personality of your baby takes time, patience, understanding and skill, so it’s important you choose a photographer who knows exactly what they’re doing. And though all babies will react in a slightly different way – and you can’t always guarantee they’ll play ball - an experienced photographer will be able to get the best out of your baby and take photos you’ll be able to treasure forever.

baby photographer

Photographing newborns

Newborns are typically brought into the studio when they’re between 5-14 days , I photograph newborns up to 3 weeks old and then offer a mini newborn shoot for 4-12 week old babies. In those early days babies have that distinctive newborn look, (little flakes of skin , button noses, whispy hair) something that’s wonderful to photograph. Often, newborns will be photographed asleep. Though you may also want images of them with their eyes open, sleeping photos make wonderful mementos and will look great on your wall for years to come.

As parents of newborns will know, it can take a while to get a brand new baby settled when they’re in a new environment. That’s why it’s a good idea to book a shoot that’s at least two hours long. As well as making the experience more relaxed, this helps to ensure you’ll get great images even if your baby is a little unsettled for part of the shoot, the photographer's job is to soothe and settle making this your chance to enjoy a hot cuppa.

Siblings

When looking for newborn baby photograper in Norfolk, it’s a good idea to book a photographer who’s happy to take images of your older children too. That way you can ensure all the family feel included in the occasion and capture priceless images of your babies together.

To find out more about newborn photography in the Norwich area, give me a call/ email or take a look through my newborn galleries.
